Hirneisen Electric, a PECS preferred contractor, was recently awarded a $1,048,000 electrical contract for a new fire station in Reading.
The state-of-the-art fire station will replace the city’s oldest fire station — an 1887 structure that lacked the space, safety features and amenities required by today’s firefighters to effectively and safely do their jobs, Reading City Councilman Stratton Marmarou would frequently tell elected officials, according to Firehouse, an information news source for fire and rescue professionals.
The new station features a footprint three times larger than the old station and will include areas for sleeping, laundry, maintenance, storage, offices, living space, restrooms and a gym, according to Berks Weekly. It will also provide the ability to house a spare apparatus, which could be deployed as needed in the neighborhood or service multi-alarm fires in nearby neighborhoods.
“This station will not only allow the department to protect and serve the citizens of the northeast section of the city, but it gives the firefighters who work in it a modern station that provides for both their physical and mental well-being,” Fire Chief William I. Stoudt Jr. told Firehouse.
As part of the contract, Hirneisen Electric will install a generator for a back-up power supply.
Reading city and fire officials broke ground on the $9 million facility at the beginning of November.

Judy Schwank tweeted in commemoration of the event. “The new station will provide our dedicated firefighters with a facility that meets the demands of the modern day and will be able to house two fire apparatuses.
